Daihatsu is part owned by Toyota, so the Sirion benefits from underpinnings from the 2005 Toyota Yaris. This means it's slightly bigger than your average town car, but its snub nose and upright tailgate mean it's a cinch to squeeze into tight spaces around town. It also allows the Sirion to offer a huge amount of interior accommodation despite its relatively compact dimensions, front and rear passengers having plenty of leg and headroom. Equally impressive is the boot, which with the 60/40 split seats folded flat into the floor allows the Sirion to rival some larger estate cars. It's a smartly styled interior, too. There's a neat instrument binnacle and loads of cubbies and storage space littered around the cabin, only the quality of some of the plastics letting it down slightly. Still, with prices starting so low it's difficult to criticise the interior materials too harshly, and it all feels well screwed together. On the road it's able rather than spectacular, with little steering feel and plenty of body roll. This does at least mean it's able to soothe out the worst bumps that our poorly surfaced roads offer. Neither the 1.0-litre or 1.3-litre engines are firecrackers, both offering adequate, if sometimes noisy performance. Buyers are likely to forgive it this though as either delivers tremendous economy and a specification that includes air conditioning, four electric windows and front and side airbags as standard from the base model up. That alone makes the Sirion an attractive buy, but factor in its good looks, spacious interior, excellent fuel economy and rounded ability and the Sirion makes a strong cases for itself against more familiar competition. Spacious interior 2. Standard air conditioning 3. Punchy 1.3 litre engine WE DON'T LIKE 1. Bouncy ride 2. Poor handling 3. More expensive to run than obvious rivals Daihatsu has more experience building compact city cars than pretty much any other manufacturer, with the company's expertise being evident in the new Sirion. As with the Daihatsu Charade, the Sirion features boxy styling, although it benefits from a more distinctive front end. The cabin is particularly impressive, with lots of space, an abundance of headroom and a nicely designed dashboard. Standard equipment is generous for a car in this segment, including remote control central locking and air conditioning. Rear seat accommodation is reasonable and the boot is decently proportioned by segment standards. On the road the Sirion puts in the sort of performance that its (dynamically undemanding) clientele will expect. The revvy little 1.0 litre entry level petrol engine needs to be worked hard to produce decent performance, but the more powerful 1.3 litre motor combines respectable urge with impressive fuel economy. Both lack much in the way of grip or backroad finesse, though. The Sirion feels at home in the cut-and-thrust of crowded urban streets, but beyond derestriction signs it is loud and lacks grip. Keen entry-level pricing masks the fact that the Sirion is fairly expensive at the top of the range, getting inside the sort of money that would buy a conventional supermini. Depreciation is also fairly acute, meaning that it's not as cost-effective as it looks at first glance. Fifth Gear overall car ratings STYLING Boxy looks are lifted by the cutesy front end - a far more harmonious piece of design than Daihatsu's other recent efforts. HANDLING Lots of roll and not much grip - the Sirion is happiest on urban streets. COMFORT The ride gets bouncy over rougher road surfaces and lots of noise gets into the cabin at cruising speeds. QUALITY & RELIABILITY Impressive for something so small and inexpensive - the cabin feels like a cut above those of most obvious rivals. PERFORMANCE The basic 1.0 litre petrol engine needs to be thrashed to make decent progress, but the Toyota derived 1.3 litre motor is far punchier, and almost as economical. ROOMINESS Daihatsu's city car know-how has made this one of the most spacious vehicles in the segment. Surprisingly good for rear seat passengers, too. STEREO / SAT NAV The feeble audio system struggles to make itself heard at higher speeds. Satnav is unavailable. RUNNING COSTS Excellent fuel economy, but servicing and insurance costs are steeper than those of some rivals, and depreciation is steep. VALUE FOR MONEY Less good value towards the top of the range, but the base 1.0 S comes with standard air conditioning, making it look like attractive value. ENVIRONMENT Two versions of the Sirion are rated below 120 g/km of CO2, but the 1.3 version is poor at over 130 g/km of CO2.
