Daihatsu Hijet From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation, search Daihatsu Hijet The sixth generation Daihatsu Hijet truck Manufacturer Daihatsu Also called Daihatsu Atrai Daihatsu Extol Piaggio Porter Toyota Sparky Production 1960–present Class Kei truck Body style(s) Van Pickup truck Platform Mid-engined, rear-wheel drive / four-wheel drive The Daihatsu Hijet is a microvan and pickup truck produced by the Japanese automaker Daihatsu. Despite the similarities between the Hijet name and Toyota's naming scheme for its trucks and vans (Hiace and Hilux), the name "Hijet" has been in use for Daihatsu's Kei trucks and vans since 1960, over two decades before Toyota took control. "Hijet", when transliterated into Japanese, is very similar to "Midget", one of Daihatsu's other mini-trucks. The Hijet competes in Japan with the Honda Acty, Subaru Sambar, Mitsubishi Minicab, and the Suzuki Carry. Available engines for 2006 include the DVVT equipped 660 cc EF-VE, making 39 kW (52 hp) at 7,000 rpm and 63 N·m (46 lb·ft) of torque at 4,000 rpm, and the 660 cc EF-SE, making 33 kW (44 hp) at 5,900 rpm and 57 N·m (42 lb·ft) of torque at 3,600 rpm. The base model is mid-engine, rear drive, but four-wheel drive versions are available. In Japan, the passenger car version of the Hijet is known as the Daihatsu Atrai, which is also powered by a 660 cc Turbo engine producing 64 bhp (48 kW). The band Diehatzu Hijets, of similar spelling pay homage to the vehicle. The sixth generation Hijet Cargo. It is no longer consider a kei car as it is wider and longer. The Hijet Maxx/Hijet Jumbo is a pick-up truck or chasis cab which can be set up for other uses such as a moving stall. While Daihatsu Zebra a.k.a Daihatsu Citivan/Devan is a van based body. Perodua Rusa is a rebadged Daihatsu Zebra in Malaysia, released by Perodua. The Piaggio Porter is a licenced version manufactured in Italy, available also with an LPG or electric motor.[1] All of these variants are based on early version of the Hijet which has its front wheel located below the front door (or engine below the front seat). In 2007, Daihatsu Indonesia launched the new Daihatsu Gran Max which is based on the newest Hijet (front wheels located forward of the door). It is powered by 1300 cc and 1500 cc engines, wider and longer than the kei car based Hijet. The Gran Max is available in minivan style and pick-up. [edit] Hybrid Hijet In 2002, Daihatsu debuted the Hijet Cargo Hybrid concept, a hybrid van, in Japan using a 660 cc engine. The car is based on the existing non-hybrid Hijet Cargo. Daihatsu calls it a mild hybrid design. Its design (called Daihatsu Mild Hybrid System or DMHS based on Toyota hybrid technology) is quite different from many existing hybrid design where as the gas and electric powered components assembled as one unit. The electric motor sits between the gasoline powered engine and the transmission unit. The car is 30% more fuel efficient than its gas-powered counterpart. The hybrid minicars (called FEV - Ultra Fuel Economy - and Atrai Hybrid-IV) made its debut in 2002 as a concept minicar.[2] Its production was announced in October 2004 but as of May 2006 had not been released. It comes with a variety of options and chassis variations, with the latest variant having four models: "Mira", "Mira AVY", "Mira Gino" and "Mira VAN". The Mira is the latest successor to the line of cars begun with the Daihatsu Fellow of 1966 and was originally introduced as the commercial version of the Cuore. Outside of Japan, the Mira has also been offered with an 850 cc engine. In Australia, the two-seater version was known as the Handivan and was later renamed as just Handi.[1] Contents 1 History 2 L200 series 3 L500 series 4 L251 Mira 5 Gino 6 Gallery 7 See also 8 References 9 External links [edit] History In July 1980,[2] the Daihatsu Mira and Cuore arrived to replace the Daihatsu Max Cuore. The second generation (L70) of the Mira/Cuore was introduced in 1985, and the third generation (L200) in 1990. The third generation of Mira also was identical in look to the 1986-1992 Daihatsu Leeza. The fourth generation (L500) was introduced in 1994 and was still based on the same chassis as the L200. October 1998 saw the fifth generation (L700) introduced, the sixth generation was introduced in 2002 (even though the Mira Gino (L700) remained in production until 2004), and in 2006 the seventh generation model was introduced. The L200 variant (1990–92) had two engine sizes: a 3-cylinder 660 cc engine with 40–64 PS (29–47 kW) was available in Japan, while in Australia and other parts of the world, a bigger-hearted variant with a 847 cc and a 4-speed manual gearbox was in use from 1990–91. A 5-speed manual transmission became available in 1992. The L500 Mira is the first kei car from Daihatsu which offered a 4-cylinder 660 cc engine. [edit] L200 series The L200/201 was the third and most popular generation of the vehicle, offered in a large number of variants. The L200/201 (front-wheel drive) was produced with the Mira badge from 1990 to at least 1998, but the platform lived on in other badges. As with most Kei cars, the 200-series came in two primary variants: The "V" Series is a windowed van style intended for light commercial use. This variant featured a fold down rear bench seat without seat belts. The "S" series, intended for private use, is largely similar but the larger, more comfortable rear seats are equipped with belts and are further to the rear of the vehicle with more leg room. While the seats still fold down, unlike the "V" the "S" does not offer a flat loading floor. A four-wheel drive variant known as the L210 was also available in V or S models. The Mira could either be equipped with a three-speed automatic, or four- or five-speed manual transmission. An electronically fuel injected turbo was the range topper, whereas the normally aspirated base versions made do with a one barrel carburetor. The L201 was sold outside of Japan primarily in the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand. The three or five-door 201 featured a larger displacement of 847 cc and a five speed manual transmission. Van versions were also available in Australia, called Handivan (later shortened to Handi).[3] The 201 had myriad market and model differences. The United Kingdom version of the Mira had a rear fog lamp on the right hand side, while Cuore badged L201's had a fog lamp on the left side. Later models of the Mira badge had fog lamps on both sides. The L201 had two license plate lamps while the L200 had only one. L200 Miras produced for Japan had no rear fog lamps. Despite the Mira badge mostly being available in Right Hand Drive markets, left hand drive Mira-badged L201's was sold in the Dominican Republic. Daihatsu's Thai arm produced a ute version for the Thailand domestic market from 1991 to 1995, called Mira P1. This ute version was built with a pickup bed, tail gate and redesigned taillights. Coming full circle, and mirroring the development of the SUV, Daihatsu also developed the Mira P4: a roofed four-seater wagon version of this micro-ute. Some P4s retained the pickup's fold down tailgate, adding a top-hinged glass, while some had a top-hinged one-piece tailgate. Later, there was an extended cab 2+2 seater ute ("Daihatsu Miracab") and a hatchback with an enlarged rear end, called the "Mint". A larger, highly customizable two-seat step-van variant was also produced, solely for the Japanese market. [edit] L500 series Production of the L500 Miras started in September 1994. The design of the car was slightly altered but retained a similar look to the L200. The L500 Mira was badged outside of Japan primarily as the L501 Cuore. The 200 serie's Mira ceased sales in Japan but continued in some other markets. The L500 was the first kei class vehicle to feature a 659 cc displacement four-cylinder engine. The range of models available in the 200 platform carried over to the 500 series. The model remains in production today (September 2010) only in Pakistan, as the Daihatsu Cuore. It has rolled off the assembly line of Toyota Indus Motor Company since 2000, with an 847 cc carburetor engine.[4] [edit] L251 Mira The L251 Mira, unrelated to the earlier 200-series, is the most recent generation of the car. The car is produced as the Mira in Japan. The L251 platform was also shared with the most recent version of the Daihatsu Charade in the United Kingdom. Elsewhere this was badged and sold as the Cuore. [edit] Gino For more details on this topic, see Daihatsu Mira Gino. A retro version of the Daihatsu Mira based on the L700 platform began production in 1999. The Miro Gino was produced with features and options of the regular variant but styled with a retro look. The Mira Gino was only offered with a 659 cc engine in Japan. A car based on the Gino with a one-litre engine was sold as the Daihatsu Trevis in other markets. So expect to pay two or three times the price for parts. The other reason is one that has only just come to our notice and one that may be the deciding factor as to whether to buy one of these vehicles or not. In the 2006 Budget, as many of you are probably aware, new rules came in regarding Car Tax. This was good news for many. Since the Hi jet has low emissions, in fact very low, we thought ......got our reminder and noticed we had been placed in the top band G. This is the highest band possible and very expensive. After a year of mistakes, letters, phone calls and getting the Minister of Transport involved we have been told that the vehicle is classed as a non passenger carrying vehicle and so must be taxed as one. Investigation by us found we were the only ones taxed as such but acording to Daihatsui all the others have been wrongly registered. ... I bought my first one in 1996, and replaced this with a new one last year (cost just about £8000). Why? Because it can park in the same space as the old mini, but it can carry up to 5 adult passengers (and a week's shopping)! It is very manoeverable (the turning circle is tighter than that of a mini), and adaptable (the rear passenger seat folds, giving space to carry, for example, 2 cycles). Comfort-wise, ......no problem with legroom. My new 1.3 version is a bit nippier than the old 1.0, but it is definitely not a vehicle for the boy-racers! If you can't accept being overtaken, it is not for you. At 70 on the motorway it is noisy, it is a bit hairy in high winds (well, it is tall), and it does look odd.
